The first of the morning semi-finals was contested between Army represented by Eilean Cunningham, Ailsa Fraser and Marion Howells, and Hockley represented by Chris Quinn, Helen Bailey and Beth Goater. Chris Quinn and Helen Bailey both won their matches for Hockley on the 15th and 16th respectively, so with the final match returning to all square after 15 holes following a determined fight back by Marion Howells, this match was declared a half and Hockley progressed to the final.
The second semi-final was contested between Brokenhurst Manor represented by Elaine Barrow, Laura Barrow and Nikki Hatch, and Stoneham represented by Adrian Mylrea , Louise Caplen and Caroline Caswell. Elaine Barrow won the first match on the 17th for Brokenhurst Manor but Stoneham were successful in matches 2 and 3 winning on the 16th and 15th to go through to the final with Hockley.
Hockley players kept to the same order in the final but Stoneham switched around so Caroline Caswell played Chris Quinn, Adrian Mylrea played Helen Bailey and Louise Caplen played Beth Goater.
Match 1 began with 2 wins and a half to both sides so after 5 holes the were all square. Chris Quinn then won the next 3 holes which together with a half on the 9th meant that Hockley went through the turn 3 up. Caroline Caswell then won the 10th but conceded the 11th to Chris Quinn. However, Caroline then won both the 12th and 13th to peg Hockley’s lead back to 1 up, but with Chris winning the 14th followed by 3 halves, Hockley took the first match on the 17th.
Match 2 started with a half followed by a birdie 3 on the 2nd for Helen Bailey for Hockley, however Adrian Mylrea quickly levelled things on the 3rd and took the lead on the 4th for Stoneham. Adrian held this lead until the 13th when Helen brought the match back to all square. Adrian then won the next 3 holes to win on the 16th for Stoneham.
Match 3 became the deciding match, the ideal situation for the neutral spectators who had enjoyed watching a day of good competitive golf. Louise Caplen took an early lead for Stoneham and progressed to 3 up at the turn, this lead increasing to 5 up with 5 to play. Beth Goater then won the next 3 holes for Hockley but a half one the 17th resulted in a win for Louise Caplen and Stoneham won the North Hants Trophy for the second year running.
Congratulations to Stoneham, winners of the North Hants Trophy 2016, the final score being Stoneham 2 Hockley 1.
