Div 1 Autumn Meeting

Friday 5th October, 2018

Stoneham Golf Club

18 hole medal (full qualifier) – handicaps + to 20

The end of season Division 1 Autumn Meeting at Stoneham GC on 5th October was to be the exciting finale to the HLCGA year but the weather had other ideas. It was however, a very sociable day with friends meeting and catching up while the fog lifted.

There was a 2 hour delay until the bunker on the right on the 1st came into sight so unfortunately this mean’t the competition was reduced to only nine holes. The Competition Secretary set up a new course on Intelligentgolf including holes 1-10 minus the newly constructed 2nd and those who could stay started play in what was to become a brilliantly sunny and warm day. Sadly, the field of 96 ladies shrank to 79 as those on the Isle of Wight had their ferries cancelled on them but well done to Ann Geary from Osborne who struggled on and managed to get to the club for a 2pm tee time!

Stoneham was very well represented and local knowledge paid off with 7 of them in the prizes. Thanks go to our Treasurer Judy Andrews again for being very generous with 19 prizes, which included 2 aggregate prizes. Scores from the Championship week at Royal Jersey in May were included and it was very tight for the best nett prize going to Ruth Allan of Stoneham by ½ a shot with nett scores of 75 and 38.
Gross and nett prizes were awarded in all 3 divisions. Elaine Hutchings, also from Stoneham, took best nett score of the day with 31½ and it was our 2018 Champion Kerry Smith of Waterlooville, who won the meeting gross prize with a 1 under par score of 35 and also the aggregate gross trophy with her Spring gross of 77.

Congratulations to all the winners, well done to all taking part and for your generosity with the lady Captain Carole Hopper’s ball sweep with proceeds going to MIND . All were fed and looked after wonderfully by the catering staff at Stoneham led by Chrissie. Thanks also go to head greenkeeper Matt and his staff for working so hard before in getting the course ready and to Assistant Secretary Lawrence for his help too. Secretary Richard Arnold was on hand all day to assist with ever changing plans and has been kind enough to offer Stoneham in 2019 for the Seniors’ Championship in July.

As always, those out on the course worked hard with numerous rule issues and again thanks to Jackie Keay, Di Stock and newbie Jo Youngs for their commitment on the day and to the Stoneham ladies for ball spotting.

Next year’s Championship week is at Hockley and the Autumn Meeting for Diiviision 1 is at Waterlooville so two testing courses again to challenge you all.
