Barton on Sea Golf Club
36 hole medal for handicaps + to 20 and 18 hole stableford for handicaps 21+
It may have been the final day of the 147th Open Championship at Carnoustie but down on the south coast another links course beckoned Hampshire’s Junior Girls for their annual Championship and Douglas Cup. Seventeen girls from across the county were greeted with glorious sunny conditions down at Barton on Sea. A slight breeze in the morning challenged some of the girls and with a lot of run on the ball it was easy to find the occasional bunker or long rough.
At the half way point an excellent 76 from Beth Goater led the gross, while the nett leaderboard at halfway was topped by Stevie Crozier-Hunt with a magnificent nett 69. However, with the breeze picking up and another 18 holes to go, anything could happen.
The morning also saw eight girls take part in the Douglas Cup, our annual stableford competition for 21+ handicaps. Again, a mixture of scores game into the clubhouse, reflecting the challenging and changeable conditions of links golf. However, three girls managed to accumulate the points needed to find their way into the prizes: Abigail Dymott from Meon Valley secured 3rd place with 40 points, our runner up from Alresford, was Jenny Myers with a very solid 43 points and our 2018 Douglas Cup champion was Millie Jonathan, also from Meon, with a fabulous 44 points.
As anticipated, the breeze did pick up in the afternoon making conditions quite different and arguably trickier than they were during the morning round. Some were in their element though and two very steady rounds from Charlotte Dack were enough to secure victory in the gross competition with a combined score of 159. The nett competition was very close with only 1 stroke separating first and second place, with combined total nett score of 145 our handicap winner in 2018 was home girl Ellie Mans, closely followed by Stevie Crozier-Hunt with 146.
Well done to all the girls who took part in such a fantastic day. Thank you to all the staff of Barton on Sea for being excellent hosts during the day and an extra special thank you to Barbara Wildgoose who started all the girls off on both rounds, and to Liz Eady for organising and leading the group of ball spotters out on the course.
Next up – Junior County Match Week 13th – 15th August.
