Blackmoor’s Esther Sparrow pulled off a double triumph in the English women’s Par 3 championship, winning the individual title and helping her team to victory at Ampfield this week.
Esther scored net 55 and won on countback from Celia Woolston of Worldham Park.
Two birdies in the last three holes proved crucial, helping her to play the back nine in one-under par gross. “The putt on the last was tracking and I thought ‘that’s a bit hard’ but never mind, it went in,” said Esther. “That birdie on the last sealed the deal.”
The team win was much more comfortable. Esther and fellow Blackmoor members, Nicki Corkill and Annie Murgatroyd, scored a total of 178 and won by seven shots from teams from Alresford and Corhampton.
“Ampfield is a fantastic course,” said Esther. “It’s an amazing challenge, a fun place to play and really good for your short game. I had a great day.”
This was the second time the trio had played in the competition. “I didn’t have a great round and neither did my team-mates,” remembered Esther. “We were determined to come back and I’m delighted to win, for me and the team. It’s so fantastic that we did that.”
