JCMW Day 3

For the sake of repeating myself, another day of so near yet so far for the Hampshire Girls as we played a very experienced Middlesex Team on the final day.

Once again we fielded a team of Rookies with only Beth Goater, who gamely led from the front all week, the only girl to experience JCMW in the past. Charlotte Dack once again missed the match through Injury.

The girls were sent out with the warning against complacency after yesterdays highs. Coupled with Middlesex losing to Sussex, this for me was going to arguably be our toughest match.

As any of you that have been involved in a County Match Week will know the fatigue and tiredness can be draining on the last day and sure enough the odd tired swing on the first few holes was there to see….but sure enough with the adrenalin starting to kick in our Girls started playing decent golf and competing.

5 of the 7 matches once again went up the final stretch of the last 3 holes.

Amelia Williams soon notched our first point, her 3rd from 4 matches in her first JCMW, from then we lost a few decisive holes swinging matches and points in Middlesex favour.

Lucy O’Herlihy once again dug deep and from being 2 down with 3 to play secured a brave half point, albeit the Middlesex girl having to drain a 6 footer on the 18th to get the half.

Final Match of the tie saw Blackmoor’s Maisie Ord recovering from 2 down to win 3&2, after 2 near misses on day 2 Maisie thoroughly deserved her point. Great resilience!

Final Score Middlesex 4.5 Hampshire 2.5

What started out as an inexperienced bunch of girls ended the week as a team with great spirit, huge heart and a new belief in their ability. To see this team grow together over 4 days was remarkable and one I am very proud to play a small part of, as was Coach Kevin Flynn.
