So after all the wait, the opening day was upon us and the schedule dictated that Hampshire would play our Stableford 4somes first up at 8am.
With only 2 of our 9 girls experiencing JCMW in the past, an excited but nervous inexperienced team set about their warm up routines.
Off they went and after an initial cagey opening 9 holes the group settled and played some decent golf on the back 9 returning competitive and steady scores for the Stableford Comp………fingers crossed the scores hold up later in the week.
Plenty of highlights from the morning, but 1 shot that truly stood out was First timer Ciara Stocks nailing an approach from a tough lie, on the tricky elevated Par 5 10th, from 160 plus yards to 2 foot that would of brought open grandstands to their feet!! Her playing Partner Captain Georgina obliged and sunk the Birdie Putt.
Our afternoon match paired us up with neighbours Sussex, who named a strong team and we were defeated 5-2, but i think a strong watching gallery will agree the scoreline did not tell the whole story!
Quite easily the final score could have been a lot more even with 3 of the matches going to the final couple of holes of which 2 went up the 18th.
The rookies were truly thrown in and i can honestly say how proud i was to see all the girls compete and show great character throughout the match, the hugs between opposing players on their respective finishing holes was great to see and testament to a good battle in the right manner.
A solid convincing win for Amelia Williams in her first match and also the ever calm, smiling Lucy O’Herlihy sinking a 2ft putt on the 18th to claim her victory………did her Sister Tara win her first match??? Will have to check the history books for bragging rights!! 😊
