Hayling Golf Club held its Past Captains’ lunch on 18th October, preceded by a 10 hole stableford competition. Twenty one Past Captains attended but the guest of honour was the wonderful Biddy Benson who celebrated her 100th Birthday on 11th October!!

Biddy was Captain of Hayling Ladies in 1965. She started playing golf in her late 30s and got down to a single figure handicap of 7. Biddy was a member of Lee on the Solent and Hayling Island Golf Clubs before moving to live in Malta in 1969 where she played at the Marsa Club and was their ladies’ champion for 9 of the 11 years that they were there.

On he return, Biddy became a member at Meon Valley where she was Captain in the 1980s before joining Cams Hall in 1993. At 87 Biddy was Cams Hall’s Seniors Champ and interviewed about her success by the Today programme. Even at 92 Biddy was still able to play a round in under her age (a gross 91). She finally retired from the game at the age of 95. Both of Biddy’s daughters Jenny Steiner and HLCGA Past President Bridget Moore still play golf in Hampshire.

Biddy, from all of us across Hampshire congratulations on celebrating your 100th Birthday. Thank you for proving that golf keeps you young and for being such a positive influence on golf in our region.
