Kerry is now a four time winner having won in 2002, 2003 and 2006 and in 2016 after a ten year gap. The final match played between Kerry and Sarah Bradshaw from Stoneham was a great game and too close to call the whole way round.
Sarah started with back to back birdies to take an early lead but Kerry got one back on the third after a great putt from off the green helped her secure par.
After the 3rd came a run of holes that were halved between the pair in pars. At the turn Sarah remained 1 up. It wasn’t until the 13th that Kerry managed to break the pattern and win the hole with a magnificent birdie, which she closely followed by a par on 15 to go 1 up.
Sarah fought back hard with a par to win the 16th and a half on 17 meant that the pair and the gathering of spectators were heading up 18 with the match all square. A bad lie in the rough for Sarah meant that she was unable to advance the ball very far on her second shot and this proved to be the deciding factor as Kerry made par and won the match 1 up.
In the Challenge Salver final, Tammy Andrews (Corhampton) played Julie Newbold (Royal Winchester). After two pars on the opening hole, Julie managed to go 1up on the 2nd with a net par but her lead didn’t last for long as Tammy clawed back the advantage on the 3rd with a par of her own.
Three more consecutive pars saw Tammy up by 2, the 6th by dint of a chip in. The excitement in this match was by no means over as Julie won the 7th with a par and Tammy won the 8th, again with par. The 9th was halved in pars leaving Tammy 2 up at the turn but giving a shot on Basingstoke’s par 4 10th hole proved too much for Tammy and Julie took this one.
Some excellent golf was enjoyed from both competitors the whole way round and a flurry of wins at 12, 13 and by virtue of a birdie at 14 saw Tammy go 4 up with 4 to play. An amazing bunker shot from Julie on the 15th meant that the pair would advance to 16 but another par from Tammy ensured a win 4&2.
In the Challenge Bowl, Sue Blundell (Meon Valley) was looking to retain her title from last year when she went up against Sheila Purvis (Blackmoor). This match was played in a very calm, polite atmosphere and was nip and tuck until Sheila went 2 up on the 7th. Sue then fought back and won holes 9, 10, 11 and 12 to make the match swing in her favour. Sue continued to put the pressure on Sheila and managed to clinch the win 4&3 to retain the title for a 2nd consecutive year, the only time this has been achieved since 1937 & 1938.
