Junior Championships 6th April 2016 – Report.
This year the championships were played on a day where showers in the morning, and gales in the afternoon did little to deter the girls. The 36 hole Medal competition was played with a lot of camaraderie, and even some very good golf. Most players in the Championships ( handicaps 20 or below) had some birdies, and several pars. For many the missed putts were of concern, as they found it difficult to read the greens, or judge the pace after the rain. There were a lot of “ if only” moments, but the fact that the CSS remained at 72 both in the morning and the afternoon indicated a steady standard of play.
It was tight at the top with Flora Keites (Royal Jersey) and Junior Captain, Katy Mackworth –Praed (North Hants) only one shot apart after 36 Holes. Flora’s gross score of 155 was just enough to win the Championship Cup. Net Champion was Charlotte Dack ( Meon Valley) with 142, closely followed by Georgina Carter ( North Hants) with 143.
Flora also won the Daily Telegraph competition with her score on the first round, and birthday girl Olivia Ripiner from Meon Valley won the under 14 Telegraph Competition . Olivia had a handicap of 36 a year ago, and is now playing off 18 . Can she halve that handicap in the next 12 months?
The Douglas Cup for players with handicaps between 21 and 45 ( although 36 handicap was the playing limit) played a Stableford Competition. It was won by Emily Curwood (Rowlands Castle) with 41 points, and Hannah Dymott ( Meon Valley) had 39 points. Both girls had a handicap cut, and will now be playing off 34. This was particularly impressive for Hannah, as her handicap prior to the competition was 43. Emily’s had been 40.
Whilst the second round of the Championships was being played, the Douglas Cup girls played the Alresford Ladies in a 4BBB friendly. The girls won 2 games and lost 1.
After a good match tea presentations to the winners and runners up were made by Jackie Keay, Hampshire Ladies President.
