Alresford Cup 2015
Sunday 27 September 2015
at Alresford Golf Club
Berkshire, Dorset, Hampshire, Kent, Surrey, Sussex and Wiltshire are playing for the prestigious Alresford Cup this year (donated by the Ladies of Alresford GC and held at Alresford Golf Club). A team consists of six junior girls who each play an individual full handicap Stableford round, the best four scores to count. Each team consists of one player in handicap range 0-9, two players in handicap range 10—15, two players in handicap range 16—24, and one player in handicap range 25—30. This team is selected by the County Junior Organiser.
And warm autumn sunshine graced the day! We just can’t remember an Alresford Cup with better weather than this year – it is simply delightful to be at Alresford GC to see all the junior girls enjoying the always beautifully presented course as well as the welcoming hospitality from all in the clubhouse. Very many thanks too to Alresford’s Mike Roe for this year’s team photos and for allowing us to use them.
This is a very special event in our calendar and all the counties taking part relish being able to introduce so many of their young golfers to representing their county. It is always held at Alresford GC, and their ladies’ section makes the event run so smoothly by providing so many volunteers to shepherd each playing group throughout the day. It gives us all a very happy reminder of what fun it is for us all to see a healthy future for golf thanks to great events like this, so much encouragement from junior organisers and, certainly at Alresford, club members – and of course parents!
The scoring was good again this year, and for a while it looked as if there might have to be a countback to discover the winners, but eventually Wiltshire pipped the leading scores – and then Kent came in with a flourish to finish six points ahead of the rest. Congratulations to everyone who represented their counties, but especially to Kent, this year’s winners, and to runners-up Wiltshire in their first year at the Alresford Cup.
