Stoneham Cup 2015

STONEHAM CUP SEMI-FINALS & FINALS
at ROWLANDS CASTLE GC
on THURSDAY, 24 SEPTEMBER 2015

(See Club Events Info & Rules in the RH menu for the rules)

Following the completion of the 2015 Stoneham Cup group stages, the quarter finals were played on neutral courses and the matches were:

  • Petersfield v Dummer at Blackmoor
  • Hartley Wintney v Romsey at Army
  • Gosport & Stokes Bay v Blackmoor at Petersfield
  • Army v Southwood at Romsey

It’s perhaps the saddest round to lose in – your club has excelled to be winner of its group, but has just fallen tantalisingly short of taking part in Semi-finals/Finals Day.  Commiserations to Dummer, Romsey, Blackmoor and Southwood on being pipped at this point this year, but we know you will be in next year’s draw and will again be strong contenders.

So Finals Day dawned, and for most of us our extremely wet early journey to Rowlands Castle GC was just filled with the hope that the very heavy rain would relent, preferably sometime pretty soon.  Our hopes were granted and, although the course was a bit damp in places early on, no rain fell for the entire time we were out on the course for either the morning semis or the afternoon final.  You can see the Finals Day match results below, but rest assured the battles were closer than some of the scores suggest and it was late before anyone could be sure who this year’s finalists would be.  In the event

and

were the unlucky morning losers, but they had played their full part in giving us some very good individual matches to savour.

Off to the final then, between Hartley Wintney and Gosport & Stokes Bay.  Whichever team won would bring the trophy to their club for the first time.  There was a difference in how long each club had been trying to take home the Stoneham Cup though – Hartley have been taking part for just about the whole of the trophy’s life (101 years and counting), and Gosport entered for the first time in 2014!  Who would prevail?  You won’t get the picture of how uncertain the outcome was by just glancing below at the match sheets:  5-2 just does not tell the story.  Look at the individual match scores to see how close some of the matches were – one going up the 19th, two the distance, another to the seventeenth, etc. The afternoon was full of good golf, exciting uncertainty for the spectators – good numbers were at Rowlands for Finals Day – and nervous uncertainty for the supporters until suddenly the numbers added up for Gosport & Stokes Bay – our 2015 Stoneham Cup winners.

That’s another Stoneham Cup year over then – perhaps the most intense and sought after trophy of them all for so many of our Hampshire clubs.  About 44 clubs will again be in next year’s draw, which will be confirmed early next month.  Meanwhile though, many congratulations to all this year’s Group Winners, Semi-finalists, Runners-up, and especially our 2015 Winners, Gosport & Stokes Bay GC.

Special thanks to Rowlands Castle GC for allowing us courtesy of their lovely course for our 2015 Stoneham Cup Finals Day and to all the staff who went out of their way to ensure that the day ran smoothly for us.  Very many thanks too to Marilyn Monger for another successful season as Knockout Competitions Organiser, and to all today’s referees as well Hampshire’s many other willing and often unsung helpers who are vital in ensuring the success and popularity of our events.
