who all reached North Hants Trophy Finals Day and gave the spectators such an enjoyable day.

As always, we arrived at Army GC on an early autumn day, 8 September, to a warm and helpful welcome, and we are most grateful to Army for allowing us to hold our important North Hants Finals Day there.  The course was beautifully prepared and we anticipated and had a most enjoyable day.

In the morning semis Stoneham played Hockley and Basingstoke played Hayling – six scratch singles matches to savour.  Both outcomes were impossible to call, and the Stoneham/Hockley encounter in particular was tight as could be.  The first game out, between Sarah and Chris, in that semi was a truly scratch match and both players produced golf of the highest quality, Chris taking the point for Hockley on the sixteenth.  The other two games were even closer.  Stoneham’s Adrian and Louise could not shake Jo and Beth off.  However, with a 1up lead on the 18th and a halved hole there, Louise took the win in that match for Stoneham.  With the overall score 1-1, Adrian and Jo were going into extra time, Adrian having won the 18th to stay in the match.  It took until the 20th before we knew that Stoneham were in the final.  It had been a great semi, which could have gone either way.

In the other semi-final, Rosie, who has just completed her first year at Durham University, showed that her golf has not suffered from her important studies and first blood went to Hayling.   However, in the other two semis, Basingstoke’s up-and-coming junior Tara and already multiple Hampshire events winner this year Diane were also in great form and neither player took her foot off the pedal once they had edged a lead in their matches.

Basingstoke had won the trophy in 2012 and were runners-up in 2013, but Stoneham had never been North Hants finalists before.  So we knew Basingstoke’s strength, but we were also aware of Stoneham’s addition of two fine golfers to their ranks in the last year or two.  Both teams were of course determined and played their hearts out for their clubs, but perhaps the extra spur of trying to win the championship for the very first time gave Stoneham an extra boost.  With the first two matches going Stoneham’s way in great style, the third game between Louise and Diane was called in on the 15th and declared a half.  In fact that high quality battle was all square at the time and had also been a treat to savour for the spectators.

Very many thanks indeed to all who contributed so much to making the day such a success – including our great group of referees (Jackie, Michael and Terry), generous hospitality from Army GC.
