Inter-County Senior Team Championship

This year it was Hampshire’s privilege to host this ten counties’ event and we were lucky enough to enjoy the wonderful course and hospitality at Brokenhurst Manor GC to do so on one of the most glorious early autumn days you could imagine.  Brok’s hospitality knows no bounds – the ladies had been baking away, sweet and savoury deliciousnesses, for us all to enjoy as we passed the half-way hut.  Thank you Ladies’ Captain Angie for everything you all did to make our day with you the absolute tops.
As you can see from the above pic, we fielded a very strong team – as all the counties do in this popular and special event.  We came in with a good score (three scratch medal scores our of four to count) but we just could not keep the trophy in Hampshire for the year.  Three counties (Kent, Surrey and Sussex) put a bit of a gap between them and the rest of the field and at the end of the day Sussex’s 229 just pipped Kent and Surrey’s 230).
It had been a wonderful day, much enjoyed by all who played and watched.  Looking forward to next year when Surrey will host the event at Royal Mid Surrey – as usual on the last Monday in September.  Meanwhile, many congratulations to Sussex this year.  Full results sheet below the winners’ pic.  M

Inter-county Senior Team Championship 2015 Results

Hampshire Seniors v Sussex Seniors Friendly Match:  Won 4-1
We arrived at Lee to a gale force wind and horizontal rain!! A few individual matches were discussing ‘tossing a coin’…. but no! we all went out braving the elements. Most matches were hard fought with the result coming down to the last putt on the 18th. However, local girl Jane Bennett and sidekick Lynne Cowser, obviously inspired by the forthcoming Solheim Cup, played like ‘pro’s’ and demolished their opponents. All matches were played in a fantastic spirit and after ensuring we hadn’t lost anyone out on the course in the wind we all sat down to a very well needed meal. Thank you very much to Lee-on-the-Solent golf club and to my fabulous team who won 4/1 They were: Jane Bennett, Lynne Cowser, Lindsay Dolphin, Jane Graham, Sue Poulter, Kay Walshe, Jill England, Karen Hirst, Jenny Readman & Deb Prince.DP

Hampshire Seniors v Hertfordshire Seniors’ League Match: Lost 5 – 2
After a good journey round the M25 and up the A1 we all arrived to find an undulating course in blustery conditions awaited us. I was seriously impressed that five of my team prepared for battle by visiting the driving range. Deirdre and myself thought that pacing ourselves was a better tact!!!! Two matches did make it to the eighteenth to be decided, unfortunately to no avail. Hertfordshire ended up beating us 5-2. I would like to thank the team for putting up a great fight on a course that none of us had seen before. They were: Ailsa Fraser, Deirdre Randall, Jane Bennett, Kay Walshe, Karen Hirst (playing her first Senior’s match) Jenny Readman and Deb Prince. DP

Hampshire Seniors v Oxfordshire Seniors League Match: Lost 5½ – 1½
With pre-match viewing of The Open for inspiration the Hampshire girls were ready to take on the challenge of playing Oxfordshire at Stoneham Golf Club. The forecase promised warm weather and we also had our County Captain, Mags, there for further support. However, it turned out that in spite of our determination and fighting spirit we obviously had been inspired by Tiger Woods as opposed to Oxfordshire watching Dustin Johnson!!! I am so grateful and proud of out team knowing that they always give 100%. Thank you girls. The team was: Ailsa Fraser, Jane Scott, Debbie Tapply, Caroline Caswell, Sue Poulter, Moya Abbott and Deb Prince. DP

Hampshire Seniors v Buckinghamshire Seniors League Match:  Lost 4-3
We had an extremely early start to get to Mentmore GC for a 9.30am tee time on Monday, 27 April.  A big thank you to all who played.  The weather was amazing considering the forecast:  blue skies and ittle or no breeze, although occasionally slightly chilly.  The course might not have been in the best condition, but we did have it all to ourselves!
Lasagne and salad was much needed after walking up some of those hills – Deirdre particularly requested oxygen.
The team was Chris Quinn, Jo Russell, Deirdre Randall, Debbie Tapply, Jill England, Jane Shergold and Ailsa Fraser.  Unfortunately we lost the match 4-3 but some of the matches were very close and could have gone either way.  Hampshire put up a sterling fight against a very strong Bucks team.  Well done all.  DP

Hampshire Seniors v Berkshire Seniors League Match:  Lost 4-3
The scene was set for a terrific match. Sun shining, course in great condition and everyone raring to go.   Fantastic golf ensued with several players level par at the turn even though the greens were very tricky and quick.  Five of the seven matches had to go all the way to the 18th to decide a winner, it was that close.  After a superb effort unfortunately Berkshire just edged the win 4/3.
Well done team for putting up such a great fight.  The players were:  Elaine Barrow (Brokenhurst Manor), Jo Russell (Hockley), Deirdre Randall (Hartley Wintney), Jane Scott (Alresford), Jane Bennett (Lee-on-the-Solent), Caroline Caswell (Stoneham), Debbie Tapply (Rowlands Castle).  DP

Monday, 8 June – Hampshire v Surrey Friendly Match at Weybrook Park GC:  Lost 4-3
After a dodgy start, with the roadworks around Basingstoke making travelling interesting, we all made our allotted tee times. I had asked if Weybrook could turn off their persistent wind machine and they obliged by turning it down a little but changing the direction!!! The course was in good condition and the greens were fast with some challenging pin positions.
Our Hampshire team fought a good fight with many matches going all the way.  However, as it was set as a friendly match, our girls took this literally and unfortunately we lost 4/3.  Well played and a big thank you to everyone.
The players were: Jane Bennett, Kay Walshe, Deb Prince, Sue Poulter, Lindsay Dolphin, Jane Graham and Sara Barnes.  DP
